A Major NSFC Project of NEU – “Basic Theory and Key Technology of Intelligent Systems for Heavy Energy-consuming Equipment” Launched

On June 16, the kick-off meeting of the major NSFC project of NEU – “Basic Theory and Key Technology of Intelligent Systems for Heavy Energy-consuming Equipment” was held by combining online and offline forms in the main building of NEU.

Eight representatives from Information Science Department of NSFC were present at the meeting, including Li Jianjun (Deputy Director of Information Science Department of NSFC), Pan Qing (Director of General Affairs Division of Information Science Department of NSFC), and Wu Guozheng (Director of Division Three of Information Science Department of NSFC). More than 20 project team members, experts and scholars from seven universities took part in the meeting, including academician Wang Yaonan from Hunan University, professor Guan Xinping from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, professor Yang Chunhua from Central South University, professor Chai Tianyou (an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering), and professor Tang Lixin (an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Vice-president of NEU).Professor Zhao Ji, President of NEU, attended the meeting as well.

Zhao Ji and Li Jianjun respectively delivered a speech at the kick-off meeting. Zhao Ji expressed that NEU has been attaching great importance to and supporting the “Basic Theory and Key Technology of Intelligent Systems for Heavy Energy-consuming Equipment” project. “I hope this project will make original achievements in machine learning that can explain artificial intelligence and the introduction of real models, and conduct demonstration applications in relevant enterprises, so as to make breakthroughs in the new generation of intelligent manufacturing and lead the intelligent development of complex industrial processes in China,” he said. Li Jianjun pointed out that the participating units of the project have a strong research foundation and technical strength, especially the undertaking unit NEU has formed a unique comparative advantage in technological innovation, technology transfer and achievement transformation, and explored an effective way in the integration of government, industry, university, research and application.

Academician Chai Tianyou, the project leader, introduced the general situation of the project, including research content, objectives and expected results. Each topic leader reported in turn the technical route and research basis of their respective topic. The participating experts and leaders of NSFC reviewed and discussed the report contents and put forward constructive suggestions on the concrete implementation of the project.

Chai Tianyou made a summary speech, asking the topic leaders to further refine the research content according to the suggestions of the experts, strengthen cooperation, and strive to make the project results provide support for the innovative development of industrial Internet and industrial artificial intelligence.

The “Basic Theory and Key Technology of Intelligent Systems for Heavy Energy-consuming Equipment” project, with academician Chai Tianyou serving as the project leader, will center on three core scientific problems, namely multi-source information dynamic perception, forecast models, decision-making and control optimization, and adopt the information physical fusion system and the idea of convergence research, to combine the method of modeling, control and optimization theory with artificial intelligence technology driven by big data. It will conduct research on four topics: intelligent identification method of operating conditions of major energy dissipation equipment in complex environments; intelligent modeling method of production process of major energy dissipation equipment; integration of intelligent optimization and control of major energy dissipation equipment; R&D of intelligent systems of major energy dissipation equipment and verification of key technologies.

The project is expected to achieve the vision of intelligent manufacturing, that is, to change enterprises’ original three-layer structure - ERP/MES/PCS (DCS) to a two-layer structure composed of human-machine cooperative intelligent optimization decision system and equipment (process) intelligent autonomous control system. The systems will have the functions of perception, cognition, and decision-making, so as to solve the problem that ERP, MES and DCS (PCS) cannot be seamlessly integrated and optimized, to achieve the integration of enterprise decision-making and control, and to realize global optimization of manufacturing process. The project strives to achieve the demonstration application results leading China's new generation of intelligent manufacturing in the development of intelligent systems for typical heavy energy-consuming equipment, significantly improve the decision-making level of intelligent systems and the energy-saving effect of advanced enterprises' heavy energy-consuming equipment, and reach the international leading level of energy consumption per ton.
