On January 10th, the Chester Sall Memorial Award, established by the IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, was presented at the 2022 IEEE 40th International Conference on ConsumerElectronics (ICCE). An Event-Driven Convolutional NeuralArchitecture for Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring of Residential Appliance, a paper submitted by Yang Dongsheng (first author), doctoral student Gao Xiaoting (corresponding author), doctoral student Pang Yongheng, and Associate Professor Zhou Bowen of the College of Information Science and Engineering, NEU in cooperation with Kong Liang, a staff member of the State Grid Jiujiang Power Co., Ltd., won the 1st Place Best Paper Award.

This paper is the first to provide a DCNN-based method for non-intrusive load monitoring of residential appliance, breaking the inherent divide-and-conquer strategy of “data preprocessing-feature extraction-load identification”. The study was a key joint project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (U1908217) and a youth fund project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (61703081).

Reportedly, the IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, founded in 1952, is an authoritative journal with high influence in the field of consumer electronics and power energy. Every year, the journal selects one 1st Place Best Paper, one 2nd Place Best Paper, and one 3rd Place Best Paper. This is the first time that NEU has won this award as first prizewinner. This marks important progress that we have made in our electrical science.
