On September 13-15, the third International Workshop on Underground Oil/Gas Storage (IWUOGS 2023), initiated by NEU, jointly organized by the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering, China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau Engineering Co., Ltd., and NEU, was held in Langfang, Hebei. More than 150 experts and scholars from more than 40 units, including Feng Xiating, president of NEU, president of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering, and academician of the CAE Member, Derek Elsworth, academician of the American Academy of Engineering, Ming LU, academician of the Norwegian Academy of Engineering, and Guangqi Chen, academician of the Japanese Academy of Engineering, attended the workshop.

Feng Xiating stated in his speech that energy security and ecological security were important conditions for ensuring economic and social development. Underground storage plays an important role in maintaining energy security and ecological security. Strengthening cooperation between academic and engineering fields would be of great significance in addressing technological challenges in the field of underground oil and gas storage. He believed that participants could enrich their knowledge, enhance communication, broaden their horizons, and gain friendship through this workshop.

The workshop focused on the theme of "adapting to the new situation of energy development and promoting new breakthroughs in underground storage", and organized 23 academic reports. Professor Derek Elsworth, Professor Ming Lu, and Chief Expert Zhang Wenwei from China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau Engineering Co., Ltd. delivered the keynote speech at the workshop. Guo Shutai, a senior engineer from China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau Engineering Co., Ltd., and Wang Zhechao, a professor from NEU, were invited to give special speeches at the conference. During the workshop, the group standard "Guidelines for Geotechnical Engineering Design of Underground Water-sealed Storage Caverns" prepared by our school and China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau Engineering Co., Ltd. was released. The workshop confirmed that the fourth International Workshop on Underground Oil/Gas Storage in 2025 will be held by CNOOC Petrochemical Engineering Co., Ltd. in Qingdao.

This workshop shared new concepts, technologies, and achievements in the field of underground energy storage, providing a good platform for promoting the development of oil and gas storage theory and technology.
