Northeastern University developed packaged technology of the new type of cathode structure aluminum reduction cells

Since 2007, Northeastern University and Aluminum Corporation of China Limited have began to systematically study the significant Aluminum electrolytic energy saving technology, and successfully developed packaged technology of a new cathode structure aluminum reduction cells.


This achievement established basic theory of energy-efficient new type of cathode structure aluminum reduction cells, put forward the technologic route of saving electricity sharply in the production of aluminum fusion electrolysis and guided an important revolution in the energy-efficient technology of aluminum fusion electrolysis in the modern world.


The project team initiated the new type of cathode structure with wave reduction function as well as raising molten aluminum level in electrolytic cell , which worked out the technological problem of large fluctuation range of molten aluminum in the large-scale aluminum reduction cells that is hard to stably operate. The team has lowered the fluctuation range of molten aluminum in the large-scale aluminum reduction cells more than 1cm, thus lowered the cell voltage more than 0.3volte on the base of holding the current efficiency, which lowered 900~1100 kWh power consumption per ton of aluminum in the aluminum fusion electrolysis.


The technology of the new type of cathode structure aluminum reduction cells has been put into large scale production with its total production reaching 4.16 million tons per year. Compared with 2008 when this technology has not been generalized, this technology can help to save power 4.1 billion kwh per year, reduce the equivalent weight of CO2 emission 3.8 million and create 2 billion economic benefit.
