Recently, the National Office for Philosophy and Social Sciences announced the NSSFC project completion evaluation results. The NSSFC project Research on Translated Japanese Works in Modern Chinese Translated Literature (Project No.: 17CZW045; Completion Certificate No.: 20230081) headed by Professor Guo Rui from the Foreign Studies College of NEU received high praise from experts, and the project completion was rated Excellent. It is reported that a total of 35 out of 532 projects accepted this time were rated Excellent for completion, with an “Excellent” rate of only 6.58%.

The project, taking the development and transformation of modern Chinese society as the background, discusses the historical situation of the cross-cultural communication between Chinese and Western literature with Japan as the medium. Based on newly found historical data and systematic investigations, the project has updated and improved the existing relevant literature, corrected some errors in the existing research due to the absence of key historical data and made supplements. Additionally, the project has further restored the features and particularity of the literary and cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries in modern times, and explored and explained the unique path and historical causes of the modernization of Chinese literature and thought.

Since the project was approved in 2017, Professor Guo Rui and her research team have taken language advantage in English, Japanese, Korean and Russian to carry out scientific research cooperation at home and abroad. They followed up and monitored the project implementation steps, the quality of the interim achievements and the construction results, and have made a series of landmark research achievements. Professor Guo Rui published a high-level paper on the top-level journal Literature Review, which was subsequently reprinted in full by the Data Copy Center of Renmin University of China and the Chinese Social Science Net. The paper also won the “Outstanding Academic Achievement Award for Japan Studies” of China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, and gained positive academic evaluation and social benefits.

NSSFC project is the most important category in the field of humanities and social sciences in China. The competition for project application is fierce, and the examination of project completion is strict. The completion of the project with “excellent” grade is a high recognition of the achievements made by NEU in the construction of humanities and social sciences disciplines. This project reflects the solid and steady scientific research strength and academic innovation value of NEU, and highlights the new height of scientific research achieved by NEU in the field of humanities and social sciences. It is of important and positive significance to the construction and development of a first-class university and new liberal arts.
