Past Projects
"Research on the Design and Analysis of Real-Time Scheduling Policies in Multicore Systems."
Period: 2010 - 2012
With the ever increasing application requirements, the complexity of real-time systems continues to improve, which poses great challenge to system performance. Multicores are believed to be the dominating architecture of future real-time systems due to the scalable performance they can provide. But multicore systems usually have on-chip or off-chip shared resources, on which parallel programs have intensive access conflicts. This greatly affects the timing predictability of real-time tasks. In this project, we will conduct research in the following directions:
Cache-sensitive real-time scheduling policies;
Shared communication resource sensitive real-time scheduling policies;
Worst-Case Execution Time analysis techniques for multicores with shared caches;
Developing a prototype for multicore real-time scheduling and related timing analysis tools.
By conducting the above research, we hope to achieve the ultimate goal of “guaranteeing the predictability of multicore real-time systems while minimizing the loss of average system performance”.

"A High Performance Virtual Platform for the Design Space Exploration and Software Development of MPSoC systems"
Period: 2010 - 2012
The MPSoC architecture is experiencing a boost in complexity due to the effectiveness of Moore’s Law in deep micro-nanometer technology. On the other hand, the development of hardware technology motivates the application requirements. With these pressures, the design of embedded systems is facing a great challenge called “the Design Gap”. HW/SW co-design is accepted as a design methodology to resolve this problem. In co-design, a whole-system virtual platform is mandatory in the design space exploration of system architectures and early software development. This project will focus the research on:
The virtual platform architecture for MPSoC supporting multiple abstraction levels;
Software system abstraction techniques and simulation optimization techniques;
Heterogeneous parallel simulation techniques;
Developing a demonstrative virtual platform based on Intel Atom processor.
