The current university motto is the combination of “Striving constantly for improvement” originally inscribed by Wang Yongjiang, the first president of NEU, and “Behaving in conformity with truth” inscribed by General Zhang Xueliang.
In 1929, Zhang Xueliang invited Liu Fu (Liu Bannong) to write the lyrics of the university song and Zhao Yuanren to compose the music. Later, the song was adapted and improved by Lv Yuan, a famous composer.
