China Non-Ferrous Metals Industry Association organized experts appraisingthe projects “Technology of Large-scale Low-cost Harmless Treatment BayerProcess for Red Mud” and “Technology of Calcification-Carbonation Method for CleanerProduction of Alumina with High Efficient Use of Low Grade Bauxite”accomplished by Northeastern University (NEU) Professor Zhang Tingan’s team inShenyang recently.

According to the published results, the two technological achievements havereached the international advanced level. For instance, dealing with bauxitewhich has a alumina-silica ratio of 3.29 with this technology, the alumina’sdigestion could be as high as 86%, while using the traditional method it could onlybe less than 70%. Meanwhile, by increasing alkaline recovery rate by more than95% and alumina recovery rate by more than 50%, these technologies resolved theworld-wide problem, “red mud can’t be used”.
